The Ultimate Tattoo Appointment Checklist

Before the tattoo

  • Decide on the subject of your tattoo - Gather inspiration images and find what styles you like.

  • Choose a tattoo artist - Check out the work of some artists you are considering working with. Make sure you like the tattoos they have done on other people before you let them tattoo you. Look at pictures of their work after it has healed to see how well it holds up over time.

  • Schedule a consultation with your chosen artist - Show the artist your inspiration photos and listen to the ideas your artist has to offer to make your design unique.

  • Make your tattoo appointment and leave your deposit - At Phoenix Ink, we require a $50 deposit to book all tattoo appointments. To learn more about our deposit and cancellation policy, please visit our FAQ page.

Tattoo Day

  • No drugs or alcohol - We will not tattoo any client who is under the influence. We have the right to refuse anyone who shows up to their appointment in such conditions and keep their non-refundable deposit.

  • No blood thinners - Blood thinners cause excessive bleeding during the tattoo process. Please consult with your artist if you are taking any blood thinners, and they will advise you accordingly.

  • Consult with your artist before taking any pain killers - Certain pain relief medications, such as aspirin, are blood thinners and can create complications during the tattoo process. Please consult your artist if you wish to take pain relief medication before your appointment.

  • Shower - You and your artist are about to be very close to each other for an extended period of time. Please do them a favor, and make sure you smell nice!

  • Stay hydrated - Staying hydrated helps regulate your body temperature and fight infection. Make sure you hydrate before your appointment, and bring some water with you as well.

  • Have a good meal - Getting tattooed can cause your blood sugar to drop, which can lead to nausea and loss of consciousness. Eating a healthy, high protein meal before your appointment can help regulate your blood sugar and help your body to stay strong during the tattoo.

  • Wear the appropriate clothing - Make sure the clothing you wear to your appointment is comfortable and allows your artist access to the area you are getting tattooed. Don’t wear a long-sleeved shirt if you are getting an arm tattoo, wear a tank top. If you’re getting your chest done, wear a low-cut shirt. If you have questions, consult with your artist.

  • Bring your ID and form of payment - We cannot tattoo you if you do not have your ID and the means to pay for your tattoo. To learn more about the forms of payment we accept, please visit our FAQ page.

  • Bring snacks - Food helps regulate your blood sugar and stamina while you are getting tattooed. If you start to feel weak at any point during your appointment, let your artist know and eat something to avoid loss of consciousness.

  • Bring a sweatshirt or blanket - Getting tattooed can cause your body temperature to fluctuate. Many people get cold, so bring something to keep you warm just in case.

After Your Tattoo

  • Tip your artist and pay for your tattoo - Your artist puts a lot of time and effort into drawing your design, making sure you are comfortable, and giving you a piece of artwork to last a lifetime. Show them your appreciation by giving them a good tip. Tips are not included in the price of the tattoo.

  • Listen to your artist’s aftercare instructions - An experienced artist has seen how their work holds up throughout time. They want their work to last forever and stay in the best condition. Listen to the advice they give you about caring for your tattoo during and after the healing process.

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing - Wearing loose clothing around the area of your fresh tattoo helps it to heal evenly and avoids discomfort.

  • Do not touch the new tattoo - A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound. Avoid contact with your tattoo to prevent potential infection.

  • Do not submerge the tattoo in water - Do not take baths, go swimming, or do anything to submerge your new tattoo in water. It can expose it to bacteria and increase the risk of infection. Take showers, and clean it with soap and water. Use a soap that will not be harsh on the skin.

  • Keep it moisturized - Apply unscented lotion to your new tattoo to avoid dryness and peeling. Wash your hands before doing so. Avoid using any heavy moisturizers, such as Aquaphor, as this can clog pores and affect the healing process. Do not use any products on your fresh tattoo that you would not use on your face.

  • Avoid direct sunlight - Cover your new tattoo with clothing to avoid direct sunlight if possible. If it is not possible, apply sunscreen regularly. Avoid tanning beds. Tattoos that get sunburned will take longer to heal and may cause permanent damage to the tattoo, and UV rays also cause your tattoo to fade over time.
